Who Can Attend?

Who can attend?

The CECCE is committed to ensuring that its elementary and high schools accept children and youth who are eligible for French-language education under section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Education Act of Ontario, and its regulations. Accordingly, students who meet the following criteria are admitted to its schools:

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Place of Residence

The CECCE admits students who meet the following residency requirements:
  • They reside in Ontario within the boundaries of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE)
  • Their parent(s) or guardian(s) reside within its boundaries

Language

The child’s parent(s) or guardian(s) must meet one or more of the following linguistic criteria:
  • Their first language learned and still understood is French
  • They received their primary school instruction in Canada in French
  • They are the parent or guardian of a child who has received or is receiving primary or secondary school instruction in French in Canada

Parents who do not meet these language criteria may ask the school administration for an admission committee to consider the child’s registration anyway.

 

Religious Denomination

  • Elementary school:

The CECCE’s elementary schools accept Catholic children with a parent or guardian who is a CECCE taxpayer. Either the children or one of their parents must have been baptized in a Catholic or Catholic rite church (Available in French only) to be eligible for admission to a CECCE school.

  • High school (Grades 9 to 12):

The CECCE’s high schools accept Catholic students with a parent or guardian who is a CECCE taxpayer. The CECCE’s high schools are also open to students of all other religious denominations. In all cases, students must abide by the Catholic nature of the schools and their programs.

 

Child’s Age

  • For admission to elementary school, the child must have reached:
    • 4 years of age by December 31 of the current school year to register for junior kindergarten
    • 5 years of age by December 31 of the current school year to register for senior kindergarten
    • 6 years of age by December 31 of the current school year to register for Grade 1
  • High school (Grade 9):

Students must have successfully completed their elementary school studies.
