Transforming the Back-to-School Experience for CECCE Students

August 29, 2017, OTTAWA - This morning, over 23,500 junior kindergarten to grade 12 students began a brand-new school year at 55 Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) schools—1,000 more students than last year. The 2,750-plus administrative, teaching and support staff welcoming them were all excited and happy to be starting a new school year steeped in transforming the learning experience.

“This is a pivotal year for the CECCE,” said Johanne Lacombe, CECCE Chair. “As we gear up for our 20th anniversary in 2018, the spotlight will be on transforming the learning experience. Skilled staff in every one of our schools will put new emerging pedagogies into action to help students develop 21st-century skills and engage them in learning and pursuing their dreams,” she added.

“Enrolment at CECCE schools is soaring; our numbers have grown by about 1,000 this year. Parents entrust their children’s education to our French Catholic schools because our staff care deeply about each and every student’s success, we have transformed the classroom learning experience, and our graduation rate is high,” said CECCE Director of Education Réjean Sirois.

The CECCE opens its 55th school

This year, the first day of school was extra-special for students in the Glebe, Old Ottawa East, and Old Ottawa South, who were introduced to their new École élémentaire catholique au coeur d’Ottawa. Eagerly awaited by families in the community and the only one of its kind in Ottawa, this International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate school also offers an introduction to Spanish as a third language. The grand opening was a festive occasion for students in junior kindergarten to grade 6 embarking on a learning experience inspired by the Finnish model.

Des racines et des ailes

To mark the first day of school, over 35,000 copies of the first edition of Des racines et des ailes, the CECCE’s very own magazine, will be distributed to Centre-Est families.

A reference guide about transforming the learning experience, Des racines et des ailes delves into various aspects of updating and modernizing teaching and learning practices and showcases examples of transformation in CECCE schools.
