The second annual Course des Patriotes a huge success for École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais

October 30, 2017, OTTAWA – Through the efforts of École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais, students and families were once again able to enjoy a much-anticipated community event: the famous Course des Patriotes 2017, which took place Saturday morning in Stittsville.

This major event seeks to promote health and physical activity among young people throughout Ottawa’s west end. More than 700 participants, including school staff, students and parents, gathered to walk or run a 2-km family fun run, a 5-km run, or a 10-km run on the Trans Canada Trail. In addition, many of the runners came in costume to celebrate Halloween being just around the corner, which made the course even more fun and crazy for everyone involved.

“The run’s second year was a great opportunity for all participants to contribute to a community cause, and encouraged students to get moving and engage in some physical activity, which is the primary mission of the Course des Patriotes. I would like to thank City Councillor Shad Qadri for taking part in the event and giving the start signal to the runners,” said Johanne Lacombe, Chair of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE). Ms. Lacombe was thrilled with the high turnout. “It’s impressive to see the results of the community’s efforts and cooperation when they come together to build a better world.”

For the occasion, participants were encouraged to bring food items to be donated to food banks in Ottawa’s west end, such as the Stittsville food bank. A phenomenal amount of non-perishable items were collected thanks to the generosity of the participants.

Réjean Sirois, Director of Education of the CECCE, said “This community project reflects the CECCE’s values of innovation, cooperation and caring. These values, which are characteristic of a Catholic education, not only allowed this great project to be carried out, but also demonstrated the importance of a sense of togetherness in helping families in need in the Stittsville community. Bravo for your initiative!”
