The CECCE Reaffirms its Commitment to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorde

March 31, 2017, OTTAWA - World Autism Awareness Day is this Sunday, April 2, 2017, and the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) is committed to keeping abreast of new pedagogical approaches and offering the best programs and services to support students with autism spectrum disorder.

The CECCE’s school-based educators and Learning Support Services staff work hard to support students with autism. Numerous faculty members play an active role in their social and academic development. School administrators, teachers and teaching assistants are well-versed in the use of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) strategies. They also have access to specialists including speech therapists, ABA coaches, and resource teachers. These specialists assess students and train and support staff in incorporating ABA methods, as recommended by the Ministry of Education. Speech therapists assess students, make recommendations and, in many cases, supervise intensive speech therapy programs. Designated CECCE resource teachers are responsible for working with classroom educators to implement recommendations from ABA coaches and speech therapists.

CECCE Chair Johanne Lacombe recognizes the importance of these services: “Our team of professionals provides quality services that enable students with autism spectrum disorder to progress academically and socially in our schools. These services give students the opportunity to be their very best in a school environment adapted to meet their unique needs.”

“The CECCE truly appreciates how dedicated staff members are to students with autism spectrum disorder and is committed to meeting their special needs as it strives to ensure the success and well-being of all students, no matter their ability,” said Réjean Sirois, CECCE Director of Education.
