The CECCE launches an innovative Sport-Study program in gymnastics, in partnership with Les Sittelles Gymnastics Club

January 31, 2017, OTTAWA – Today at a press conference, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) announced an innovative new program in Orleans aimed at students from Grades 4 to 12, in partnership with Les Sittelles Gymnastics Club, to start in the 2017-2018 school year.

“This French-language Sport-Study program in gymnastics is the first of its kind in Ottawa, and the CECCE is proud to be taking the innovative step of offering the program as early as Grade 4,” said Johanne Lacombe, Chair of the CECCE. “The program will improve quality of life for participating families, because they will have at least 2.5 hours of gymnastics included in the school day, which means less time spent training on evenings and weekends. Not to mention that classes will be held right in the gymnastics club facilities for students from Grades 4 to 8, reducing their travel burden.” Furthermore, in Grades 4 to 8, no homework will be assigned.

The new program being introduced is flexible and tailored to the students. Students in Grades 4 to 8 will follow the personalized instruction model in the Les Sittelles facilities, guided by CECCE teachers. As for the high school model, it will be designed on a student-by-student basis and customized to their needs. These students will take their academic classes on line or at the high school in their neighbourhood. Also, depending on their pathway, students may be able to earn a credit in physical education and a credit under the co-op program for participating in the Sport-Study gymnastics program.

In addition to a flexible, customized academic program, student-athletes will also benefit from made-to-measure training. Each athlete will be monitored by a team of dynamic coaches certified by Gymnastics Ontario and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Students will train from August to June in order to reach their personal movement or performance objectives based on the Ontario Competitive Program (OCP) developed by Gymnastics Ontario, and will participate in competitions at their level.

The CECCE Director of Education, Réjean Sirois, believes this innovative program will help students achieve a better school-life balance. “Student athletes will be able to fulfill their 12 to 19 hours of training per week without sacrificing their studies or social life. They will also be encouraged to develop their physical abilities, their personal discipline, and their concentration, cooperation and friendship skills in a positive, inclusive and safe environment where they will be able to flourish in a French-Catholic setting.”

The President of Les Sittelles Gymnastics Club, Monique Lalonde, said she was thrilled with this partnership, which will make it easier to coordinate student-athletes’ study and training schedules, and that she hopes it will help more young people discover the wonderful sport of gymnastics.

Because space is limited, admission evaluations will be conducted in March by Les Sittelles in order to determine which athletes qualify for the gymnastics program. Families interested in enrolling in the program can find more details (in French only) at
