Over 150 Students Gather at Student Summit to Talk About Their Dream School

March 23, 2017, OTTAWA - Over 150 Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) high school students gathered in Ottawa today for the first ever Student Summit.

Attendees took in a presentation by Jacques Cool and participated in workshops and discussions with a focus on Building the school of my dreams. This major event gave students an opportunity to meet and talk about issues related to transforming the learning experience. They envisioned their dream school and expressed their expectations for the future of formal education.

“The goal of the Summit mirrors the CECCE’s vision to engage all students in learning, pursuing their dreams, and building a better world,” said Johanne Lacombe, CECCE Chair. “Students’’ contributions to the day’s conversations will be compiled in a report that the board can use to orient its approach to transforming the learning experience while ensuring the success and well-being of each student.”

According to Director of Education Réjean Sirois, “As a leader recognized for transforming the learning experience and for the excellence and caring of its Catholic schools, the CECCE must keep abreast of and embrace new trends in education. Today’s Summit was an ideal opportunity to check in with students about how they see their dream school. To help students grow into ethical and engaged citizens, the CECCE must build schools that reflect who its students are and meet their needs.”

A great deal of work went into preparing for this major event, and the participants were impressed with the results. The tow student trustees who came up with the concept, Catherine Despatie and Pablo Mhanna-Sandoval, collaborated with the CECCE’s team of trained professionals to put together a varied program that gave students a chance to reflect on a number of issues related to 21st-century education. Students also had the opportunity to participate in workshops on emerging pedagogies, technology and student well-being. By the end of the day, all of the participants were brimming with enthusiasm and full of ideas.
