Outstanding École secondaire catholique Béatrice-Desloges Students Recognized at Annual Specialized Arts Program Gala

Friday, May 19, 2017, OTTAWA - The ninth edition of the Specialized Arts Program Gala, organized by Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)—Arts students in the artistic events creation and coordination course at École secondaire catholique Béatrice-Desloges, was held yesterday evening. Every year, the gala showcases the efforts and achievements of some 300 young artists in their respective disciplines: visual arts, theatre and music.

The Artist of the Year Award, which comes with a $500 prize from Proulx Farm, went to grade 12 student Annabelle Sauvé. Danick Gratton, also in grade 12, was awarded the Valérie Goneau SHSM Award, which includes a $500 prize from Valérie’s Flutter Foundation. Another grade 12 student, Éric Bélanger, won the Creativity Award and a $100 prize from the Daughters of Isabella.

Visual arts achievement awards were presented to Emmanuelle O’Bryan (grade 9), Élissa Thomas-Richer (grade 10), Kat Holub (grade 11) and Carissa Grondin (grade 12). Theatre achievement awards went to Ryana Balmir (grade 9), Jasmine Fortin (grade 10), Laurent Frenette (grade 11) and Christopher Adrien (grade 12). Music achievement awards were handed out to Catherine Gendron (grade 9), Nicolas Groulx (grade 10), Amanda Clairoux (grade 11) and Samuel Boucher (grade 12).

Two grade 12 students received scholarships for post-secondary studies. Cédric Doyle received a $500 scholarship from the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Arts, and Sydney Desormeaux received a $500 scholarship from La Cité.

“The many prizes and awards presented to students during the ceremony are a sure sign that the Franco-Ontarian arts and culture scene is alive and well and that the next generation of artists is ready, willing, and able to change the world, one work of art at a time,” said Johanne Lacombe, Chair of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE).

“The works of art exhibited by our visual arts students and the performances by our music and theatre students this evening are a powerful testament to the wellspring of talent in CECCE schools,” said Director of Education Réjean Sirois. “The many specialist programs available in CECCE high schools enable students to discover their talents and passions in the arts and prepare for post-secondary studies,” he added.
