New sports dome at École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais in partnership with Ottawa Sooners

October 30, 2018, OTTAWA – The Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) has forged a partnership with the Ottawa Sooners Football Club and announced the start of construction on a future sports dome at the École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais. For this occasion, the CECCE’s school community and the Ottawa Sooners, with their partners in attendance, broke ground this afternoon on the site where the new sports dome will be built and is planned to open in May 2019.

The Chair of the Conseil, Johanne Lacombe, stressed the importance of this partnership between the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est and the Ottawa Sooners Football Club: “Thanks to the hard work of our valued partners, including the Ottawa Sooners Football Club, without whom this project would not have come to fruition, the École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais will stand out among the region’s schools by providing its students as well as the entire Stittsville community with such high-quality facilities. I would also like to thank Municipal Councillor Shad Qadri for his support and helpful advice throughout the process.”

“It is with much enthusiasm and pride that the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est welcomes the construction of a new sports dome that will allow the school community to play a range of sports year-round. The Conseil is planning to consult families before the end of the year in order to set up sports programs tailored to students’ interests. The Conseil also places great importance on its students’ physical and mental health and their wellness. It prides itself on providing them with facilities that promote and encourage regular physical activity,” explained Réjean Sirois, Director of Education.

To meet the Ottawa Sooners’ needs, the dimensions of the football field of the future sports dome – which will be clad in artificial turf – will match Canadian Football League (CFL) dimensions. Finally, in addition to featuring modern architecture, the sports structure will feature attractive landscaping in harmony with the current environment.

The principal of the École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais, Annie Touchette, is thrilled to see a project of this scope move forward. “I am proud to see that this young school, which opened its doors less than three years ago, is thriving. Through its involvement in this project, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est is once again proving that it is listening to the needs of its community – this as the Francophone population of Ottawa West booms. Students are very excited to think that they will be able to benefit from this new sports facility starting next spring.”
