Ministers Hunter and Lalonde visit returning students at Collège catholique Mer Bleue

January 10, 2017, OTTAWA -   Collège catholique Mer Bleue staff and students welcomed two special visitors Monday afternoon to kick off the New Year with a bang. The Honourable Mitzie Hunter, Ontario's Minister of Education, and the Honourable Marie-France Lalonde, Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, visited the new school, which opened its doors last August.

Robert Lemelin, Vice-Chair of the CECCE, was pleased with the visit. "I very much appreciate that the ministers took the time to talk with CECCE school trustees and address some of our priority issues. The visit was also an ideal opportunity to take them around the new facility and introduce them to students who are happy and proud to be at the school."

Réjean Sirois, Director of Education for the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE), was delighted with the Education Minister's first visit to a CECCE school. "The presence of the Minister of Education and the Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs in a CECCE school is an opportune time to showcase the quality of programs offered in the French-language Catholic schools."

The two ministers were welcomed by the school band playing in the school atrium. They went on to visit a Design classroom, where inventive Grade 9 students showed them their mousetrap racer creations. The ministers were also invited into a special education classroom, where students presented them with a greeting card they had made that morning.

In addition to the mainstream curriculum, Collège catholique Mer Bleue students can also challenge themselves and explore future possibilities by enrolling in the International Baccalaureate (IB) or Design programs. This state-of-the-art facility offers a range of specialized courses in a given area as well as an enrichment program for students looking for more advanced academic challenges.

With an enrollment of over 350 students, Collège catholique Mer Bleue has far exceeded initial enrolment forecasts. The school is likely to eventually reach its maximum capacity of 800 students, given that it only offered Grades 7 to 10 during its first year of operation; Grade 11 will be added in 2017, and Grade 12 in 2018.
