Grand Opening of Collège Catholique Mer Bleue, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est’s 12th High School

OTTAWA, October 28, 2016 - This afternoon, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) held a grand opening ceremony for its 12th high school, Collège catholique Mer Bleue. To mark the occasion, staff members, students and special guests including the Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, the Honourable Marie-France Lalonde, Town Crier Daniel Richer, and Singer Yao attended the celebration.

Students, staff, and the community as a whole were delighted with the opportunity to celebrate their long-awaited school. The school was named after the nearby conservation area, which early French Canadian settlers called Mer Bleue because of an ecological phenomenon unique to the region.

“I take so much pleasure and pride in seeing this amazing journey culminate in the opening of a new school,” said Réjean Sirois, CECCE Director of Education. “The grand opening of this, our 54th school, shows that Francophone families in east central Ontario value the learning experience offered in our French Catholic schools and that we are making progress every day as we cultivate our mission to engage all students in learning, pursuing their dreams, and building a better world.”

“The grand opening of this school is a milestone for the community. It is a definite sign of growth,” said Johanne Lacombe, CECCE Chair. “The CECCE is proud to celebrate the opening of this new high school, which will enable the board to better serve families entitled to French Catholic education and to offer students programs of choice, such as International Baccalaureate and a Design concentration.”

Together, the CECCE’s $1.25-million contribution drawn from reserve funds, the $21.1-million contribution from the provincial government and the Ontario Ministry of Education, and the municipal government’s collaboration made it possible to build a two-storey school for 781 students in grades 7 to 12, thereby meeting growing need for French Catholic education within the burgeoning community of Orleans.
