First Christmas for Syrian Families in CECCE Schools

December 9, 2016, OTTAWA - One year after Syrian refugees began arriving in Canada, some 250 people will gather at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, at Collège catholique Samuel-Genest for a Christmas celebration.

The Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE), which seeks opportunities throughout the year to strengthen its relationship with the community, wanted to be present for the new Syrian families’ first Christmas. Most of these families are now well established, and the closing days of 2016 are the perfect time to take stock of how they are doing a year after their arrival.

One year later, the first family of Syrian refugees to register in a Conseil des écoles
catholiques du Centre-Est school is adjusting wonderfully well. The children have
learned French and are doing very well in school.

“Advent is a time of sharing, welcoming, contemplation and gratitude for members of the CECCE community, so it is a perfect time for the board to check in with these new families and thank them for putting their trust in CECCE schools and Francophone Catholic culture,” said Réjean Sirois, CECCE Director of Education.

“All members of the CECCE are proud of the board’s community involvement and, in keeping with our tradition of caring and sharing, we wish to embrace and affirm our support for new families in the community by organizing community activities like this one. Participating in Christmas celebrations is a wonderful opportunity to meet these families and strengthen their trust in the CECCE,” added CECCE Chair Johanne Lacombe.
