EQAO Praises École élémentaire catholique La Vérendrye

February 15, 2017, OTTAWA École élémentaire catholique La Vérendrye of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) garnered high praise from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) for implementing winning strategies based on provincial test data analysis.

“Thanks to the dedication, engagement and expertise of teaching staff at École élémentaire catholique La Vérendrye, more students succeeded and achieved the provincial standard,” said Réjean Sirois, CECCE Director of Education. “École élémentaire catholique La Vérendrye is an excellent example of how analyzing EQAO test data along with data collected by the teaching staff is a proven approach to developing effective teaching strategies adapted to each school community. I would also like to salute the excellent work and exemplary leadership of Principal Suzanne Charron-Houle,” he added. 

Thirty-one percent of students who completed the mathematics component of the provincial test in grade 3 improved their performance and reached the provincial standard in grade 6, and 67% of them maintained their math performance between grades 3 and 6. This degree of improvement is 20% higher than the provincial average. In all, 9 out of 10 grade 6 students at La Vérendrye met or exceeded the provincial standard (levels 3 and 4).

At École élémentaire catholique La Vérendrye, teaching staff maintain very detailed tracking boards for every student throughout the year. This puts relevant information at their fingertips when they are making decisions for the current school year or future years and ensures that all staff members are aware of every child’s individual needs.

Communication is another very important component of the school community’s strategy to improve student performance. Teachers regularly give students feedback on how to improve their performance.

Student well-being is a third component that fosters improved performance. Teachers place a high priority on the relationships they build with each student. That relationship begins before students even arrive in the classroom. Teaching staff are available to help students at all times, including at recess and lunch. This makes students feel happy and safe at school and builds up their self-confidence.
