Entrepreneurship and Innovation the focus of the new École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais

June 17, 2015, OTTAWA – At their regular meeting yesterday, Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) trustees voted in favour of the school community’s recommendation and approved a new concentration for École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais based on entrepreneurship and innovation.

The CECCE’s secondary schools in Ottawa all offer concentrations aligned with the needs of students, parents and the community. These concentrations provide students in grades 7 to 12 with specialized training and an opportunity to learn more about a field that really interests them.

“Our secondary school concentrations are one of the factors that have enabled us to achieve the highest graduation rate in the province,” said Bernard Roy, CECCE Director of Education. “Our secondary school students learn in the context of a field that they are passionate about, so school matters to them and they are motivated to learn. These concentrations give them a competitive advantage when they pursue post-secondary education, train for a trade or enter the job market.”

The new concentration in entrepreneurship and innovation was selected following broad consultations involving students, parents and the community. The consultation identified several fields, three of which were considered as concentrations for this school: technology and innovation, entrepreneurship and visual and digital arts.

Entrepreneurship and innovation were selected because they mesh best with existing programs, are most feasible and offer good opportunities to network with the community.

“The CECCE is very pleased to see that the concentration selected for the new École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais is aligned with what students and the community want. Innovation and entrepreneurship are key skills that we want to help our students develop to keep our businesses competitive in our communities” explained Denis Poirier, CECCE Chair.

During the first school year, in 2015-16, students in grades 7 to 9 at École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais will get a preview of the new concentration because the general concepts will be integrated into the curriculum and the school’s activities and projects. Students will have the option to enrol in the preconcentration for grades 7 and 8 or in the concentration itself for grades 9 and 10 as of February 2016 in preparation for the following school year.

École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais will welcome its first cohort of students in grades 7 to 9 at the beginning of the 2015 school year. They will be temporarily housed at École secondaire catholique Pierre-Savard until their new building on Abbott Street is ready in February 2016.
