Engaged CECCE Students Participate in WE Day

November 8, 2016, OTTAWA - Tomorrow, 240 students from nine Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) schools will join tens of thousands of young people for WE Day Ottawa, an annual event in celebration of a year of action to transform communities and change lives.

Students earned tickets to this phenomenal event by taking action and making social change locally and globally through the WE movement.

According to Réjean Sirois, CECCE Director of Education, “This type of activity aligns perfectly with the CECCE’s student profile upon finishing school: all students, enriched and inspired by their Catholic and Francophone identity, will progress toward their full potential by becoming critical and creative thinkers, assertive and mature young adults, and engaged and ethical citizens. I applaud our engaged and dedicated school staff who guide each student toward success.”

During the event, Mélanie Rainville, a teacher at École élémentaire catholique Roger-Saint-Denis, will be honoured for her engagement and her dedication to fostering in her students a desire to take action and make a difference. Last year, she and her class were involved in a number of projects that had a major impact. They organized a food drive for the Kanata Food Cupboard and raised funds for WE with a hot meal sale and a bake sale. Ms. Rainville and her class also organized a Halloween costume drive to help less fortunate students at their school, a winter clothing drive for the Snowsuit Fund, and a pet food and supplies drive for the Ottawa Humane Society.

On WE Day, students and teachers will be inspired by engaged individuals who are making real change in the world around them.

“It is inspiring to see CECCE students and teachers get engaged in their community and work to make a difference,” said Johanne Lacombe, CECCE Chair. “I truly believe that the principles of Catholic education and Christian values inspire students and staff to pursue their dreams and build a better world.”
