Construction of a New French Catholic Elementary School in Orleans Begins

OTTAWA, Monday, November 9, 2015 - This afternoon, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) broke ground for the long-awaited construction of a new French Catholic elementary school for Ottawa’s east end at 665 des Aubépines Drive in Orleans.

This $14.7 million construction project is for a two-storey school that can accommodate 412 students. The building will also house a daycare with space for 39 children.

According to MPP Marie-France Lalonde, “Education is very much a priority for our government and for my riding, Ottawa-Orleans. Today I am proud to participate in the ground-breaking ceremony for a new French Catholic elementary school in Avalon. Our $8.56-million investment will meet the needs of our students and the growing population of Orleans.”

The new building will include the following:

16 classrooms

1 art room

1 special education room

1 resource room

1 library

1 gymnasium

The new school is being built to relieve pressure on École élémentaire catholique Alain-Fortin, which is operating at capacity.

“Following public consultations in the spring of 2015, the trustees approved changes to the catchment areas for some schools to relieve overpopulation at École élémentaire catholique Alain-Fortin,” explained Denis Poirier, CECCE Chair. “Students will have access to a quality Catholic education in a facility that fully meets their needs.  The Francophone community in Ottawa’s east end is growing, so the CECCE is doing everything it can to provide its students with a stimulating learning environment where they can all thrive and reach their full potential.”

“This new elementary school in Orleans will enable more students to benefit from the excellent Catholic education available in CECCE schools,” said Réjean Sirois, CECCE Director of Education. “Every time the CECCE builds a new school, it seeks to provide an enriching and caring environment in which each and every student can learn, pursue their dreams and build a better world.”

The new school is scheduled to open in August 2016.
