Construction of a New CECCE School is Under Way!

October 16, 2018, OTTAWA – Work has begun on the new École élémentaire catholique Riverside-Sud. To mark this important event, the school community and its partners held an official groundbreaking ceremony this afternoon on the site of the new school at the intersection of Ralph Hennessy Avenue and Mount Nebo Way.

“Soaring enrolment at Conseil des écoles catholique du Centre-Est schools in recent years shows that more and more Franco-Ontarian, exogamous and bilingual families are choosing the CECCE. The board is building a new school because it wants to keep meeting the basic needs of families in its school community. This new school means that over 400 JK to Grade 6 students can join the CECCE family when the next school year begins in August 2019, and that’s something we’re very proud of,” said Réjean Sirois, Director of Education.

According to local school trustee and CECCE Vice-Chair Chad Mariage, the community’s involvement and engagement played a major role in the board’s decision to move ahead with a new school. “École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître’s francophone community has grown significantly, and the school is at capacity. That’s why the board is so excited about breaking ground for a new school in southwest Ottawa. École élémentaire catholique Riverside-Sud is special because it will be the second to offer the balanced calendar that Bernard-Grandmaître has been following since 2006.” As CECCE Chair Johanne Lacombe noted, “This project is a go thanks in large part to funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education. The board is very grateful to the ministry for recognizing the community’s need and heeding parents’ call for a new Catholic elementary school in this sector.”

The board held extensive consultations involving families connected to Bernard-Grandmaître and Sainte-Bernadette Catholic elementary schools. The majority of the respondents expressed a preference for the balanced calendar, and 93% of them believe this approach has a positive impact on the well-being of students and staff. The balanced calendar is unique in that students go back to school two weeks early in mid-August and finish one week later at the end of June. This gives them longer vacations during the school year: one week at Thanksgiving, one week at Victoria Day, and two weeks in March.

An upcoming consultation will be held to determine the new school’s attendance boundaries.
