Construction Begins on New Catholic Secondary School in Orleans

OTTAWA, Thursday, May 7, 2015 – This afternoon, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) broke ground for the long-awaited construction of a new French-language Catholic secondary school in the Orleans sector of Ottawa’s east end at 6280 Renaud Road.

“This new school will meet a real need expressed by families seeking French-language Catholic secondary education for their children,” explained Denis Poirier, CECCE Chair. “Rising enrolment at both of our secondary schools in Ottawa’s east end proves that the Francophone community in that part of the city is flourishing. Thanks to this new school, the Francophone Catholic community will continue to thrive.”

This $23.4 million construction project is for a two-story school that will accommodate 781 students.

According to MPP Marie-France Lalonde, “Education has always been a priority for our government and for my riding of Ottawa-Orleans. Today I am proud to participate in the ground-breaking ceremony for a new French Catholic high school. Our investment of 20,6M$ is meeting the needs of our students and the growing population of Orléans.”

According to Bernard Roy, CECCE Director of Education, “We will put in place the programs and services necessary to help students become assertive and empowered young adults. I am confident that our devoted, competent staff will create a caring and inspiring learning environment in which each and every student can learn, pursue their dreams and build a better world.”

The new building will include the following:

  • 20 classrooms
  • 5 science laboratories
  • 4 computer and technical laboratories
  • 4 music and art rooms
  • 2 student support rooms
  • 1 stage, resource centre, cafeteria, chapel
  • 1 triple gymnasium, 1 exercise room and 4 change rooms

During its first year of operation, the new secondary school will house students in grades 7 to 10. One grade will be added every year after that for a full complement of grades 7 to 12 in 2018-2019.

As of the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, the enriched program will be offered to grade 7 and 8 students seeking a greater academic challenge. In addition, in accordance with the wishes expressed during consultation with the school community, the new secondary school will be equipped to offer a concentration that will make a series of specialized courses in a specific field available to all Ottawa students.

Approximately 200 students in grades 7 to 9 within the catchment areas for Notre-Dame-des-Champs and Alain-Fortin Catholic elementary schools will attend the new school when it is scheduled to open in August 2016.
