Back-to-school Comes Early for Students at One Ottawa Elementary School

August 15, 2017, OTTAWA - Over 650 students will kick off the new school year at École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître tomorrow morning.

The principal and her staff are excited to be welcoming their students two weeks earlier than most other schools because École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître operates according to a balanced calendar.

For over 10 years now, the school community at École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître has been following a balanced school calendar, which means that students get six weeks of summer vacation instead of the usual nine, plus an extra week of vacation in October, March and May.

“The balanced school calendar is an alternative for families, who can choose to send their children to either of two Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) elementary schools in the sector: Bernard-Grandmaître, which offers a balanced calendar, or Sainte-Bernadette, which has a regular school year. There is a lot of interest in the balanced calendar model. Enrolment at Bernard-Grandmaître goes up every year because families are so pleased with this model,” said CECCE Chair Johanne Lacombe.

Director of Education Réjean Sirois added that, “One reason parents are so interested in the balanced calendar at Bernard-Grandmaître is that it meets their unique family, work, and vacation schedule needs and gives parents the flexibility to achieve a good work-family-school balance.”
