A CECCE Student Awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers

OTTAWA, November 10 2016 – On November 8, Cassandra Joli-Coeur, a Grade 9 student at the CECCE’s Académie catholique Ange-Gabriel, was awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from the Governor-General of Canada at the event Evening of Inspiration. This honour is presented on behalf of the Governor-General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, to Canadian volunteers who invest their time and energy in helping others.

“Cassie, as her classmates call her, stands out for her exceptional leadership in terms of community involvement. As a dynamic, intelligent, passionate young woman who is full of life and gratitude for the world around her, she is a role model for students across the school board,” said Johanne Lacombe, Chair of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est.

Cassie is involved in a huge number of areas, giving her time freely and expecting nothing in return but the pleasure of helping others who are in greater need. She does a lot of volunteer work both at school and in the community. She has travelled to destinations such as the Netherlands and the Philippines with the group Children’s International Summer Village (CISV) in order to build ties with young people around the world, she organized a campaign to collect used sweaters to send to disadvantaged people in Belarus, and she helped sort used clothing at Centennial Road Church in order to help those in need in her community.

In her day-to-day life, Cassie is on bus patrol, serves as a member of student government, keeps score during basketball games, helps with her school’s food and stocking drives for the social enterprise Me to We, and serves church suppers. On top of all that, she finds the time to be an athlete and compete on the Brockville Blazers A-Team in basketball.

“She’s a remarkable student who makes the CECCE very proud. She embodies, to an amazing degree, the values of caring and peer-help taught in CECCE schools. In her own way, she is making a difference, one action at a time!” said Réjean Sirois, Director of Education of the CECCE.
