1,200 High School Students Face Off at the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est Student Network Games

May 10, 2018, OTTAWA - Today, over 1,200 students from Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) high schools gathered at École secondaire catholique Garneau to participate in the first-ever Student Network Games. Fun and learning were on the agenda for a day of friendly competition pitting grade 9 to 12 students from the board’s 12 high schools against one another.

All day, students went head to head in 35 different competitions ranging from athletic and academic to cultural, artistic, and pastoral. In addition to the usual athletic contests, there was a spelling bee, a robotics challenge, a culinary arts competition, a mini solar vehicle race, and a vast array of other exciting events.

At the end of the day, five prizes were awarded during the closing ceremony, including three trophies for the top-ranked schools overall, a trophy for best school spirit, and a trophy for best francophone spirit.

“For the students who participated today, this was a way to celebrate belonging to Franco-Ontarian culture and demonstrate awareness of their responsibility to get involved in their community,” said Johanne Lacombe, Chair of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est. “The goal of the CECCE’s first-ever Student Network Games was to bring students together to promote school spirit, challenge their skills and know-how, and support the construction of their identity as francophones and Catholics,” she added.

“The Network Games are an excellent example of how we are transforming the learning experience,” said Réjean Sirois, Director of Education. “The Games instill values of leadership and well-being that enable students to become engaged, assertive, mature members of their community.”
