11th Edition of Collège catholique Samuel-Genest Special Olympics Another Resounding Success

Friday, May 19, 2017, OTTAWA - Students in the leadership and peer support course at Collège catholique Samuel-Genest organized the 11th edition of the Special Olympics held there today. The sun shone as brightly as the faces of the 185 participants, 90 attendants, and 50 volunteers who participated in the event.

This year, Camille Rochon, Karl Ambroise and Élissa Donovan planned the event for participants living with a developmental disability. They began preparing in January to make sure everything would be perfect, and all of the events went so smoothly thanks to their hard work. According to Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) Chair Johanne Lacombe, “It’s inspiring to see young people with such strong leadership skills volunteer in their community and develop a sense of social responsibility toward their peers with special needs.”

Many organizations and schools got involved: Petit Bonheur du Patro d’Ottawa, the Centre de transition communautaire, Le Rendez-vous, the Association pour l’intégration sociale d’Ottawa, and 115 students from the following CECCE schools: École élémentaire catholique Horizon-Jeunesse, École élémentaire catholique Montfort, École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Anne, École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph d’Orléans, École élémentaire catholique Marius-Barbeau, École secondaire catholique Garneau, Collège catholique Mer Bleue, Collège catholique Franco-Ouest and, of course, Collège catholique Samuel-Genest.

The day kicked off with an opening ceremony, then each group went to its designated station to play soccer, race, or participate in shot put or long jump. After the activities, the athletes and organizers enjoyed a well-deserved barbecue, and a medal ceremony capped off the day. Every participant received a souvenir medal and t-shirt. Many said they couldn’t wait to come back again next year!

“This event has become a tradition at Collège catholique Samuel-Genest. There is nothing better than witnessing the joy of the participants and the students who cheer them on. I would like to thank the staff members and students who worked hard to make this day such a success and who gave these young people an opportunity to challenge themselves and have a great time,” said CECCE Director of Education Réjean Sirois.
