Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test - CECCE’s students achieve the best results in the province

OTTAWA, September 24, 2014 — The Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) is proud of the results obtained by its grade 9 and 10 students on the provincial tests administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) last spring. According to the information released today by the EQAO, the results for CECCE’s grade 10 students on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) are the best in the province and the results for grade 9 students exceed the provincial standard in mathematics.

Indeed, the CECCE’s grade 10 students achieved a 92% success rate on the OSSLT. Among CECCE’s grade 9 students, 88% demonstrated an in-depth understanding (level 4) or good understanding (level 3) on the academic mathematics test. Grade 9 students also saw their success rate on the applied mathematics test increase 6% over the previous year.

The results for two schools stood out in particular. At Académie catholique Ange-Gabriel, 100% of students reached the provincial standard for the academic mathematics test while at the Centre professionnel et technique Minto, the same percentage was achieved on the applied mathematics test. The success rate for these two schools on the OSSLT is also 100 %.

Bernard Roy, Director of Education of the CECCE, wished to emphasize that “the excellent results obtained by our grade 9 and 10 students on the provincial tests come on the heels of those released last week for our grade 3 and 6 students. These results show that from Junior kindergarten to grade 12, the staff in our schools work together to support and engage all students in their learning so they can progress toward their full potential.”

Denis Poirier, Chair of the CECCE, was also very pleased with grade 9 students’ results in mathematics. “We are proud to see that the educational strategies employed in the CECCE’s schools are proving effective in mathematics. These results confirm our vision as a recognized leader in transforming the educational experience.”

It bears repeating that in grades 3 and 6, the CECCE’s results on the provincial tests administered by the EQAO came first in Ontario in four of the six results released on September 17, namely in mathematics for grades 3 and 6 as well as in reading and writing for grade 3.

With over 21,000 students attending 41 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, and its school for adults, the CECCE represents the largest Canadian network of French-language schools outside Quebec.
