Personalized Instruction

Personalized instruction Program

WHAT IS PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION?

This approach to learning is based in large part on Montessori pedagogical principles. These principles were developed by the renowned Dr. Maria Montessori, who perfected a teaching method that emphasizes the importance of the child’s sensory education, memory development, and freedom to act guided by the educator. Basic Montessori pedagogical principles include:

  • guiding the child toward autonomy and responsibility;
  • respecting each child’s rhythm;
  • providing a calm and welcoming environment; and
  • enabling the child to develop a unique relationship with his or her teacher.

WHY CHOOSE A SCHOOL THAT OFFERS PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION?

Personalized instruction schools offer a pedagogical approach that:

  • is based on Montessori pedagogical principles and complies with Ontario curriculum;
  • enables each child to learn through individual and group activities;
  • employs teaching materials that promote subject integration while respecting the child’s learning rhythm; and
  • motivates students at every level they complete, which encourages them to keep striving. When students complete the curriculum requirements for their grade (in math, français and English), they remain with their group but start working on the curriculum requirements for the next grade.

HOW DOES THIS APPROACH BENEFIT CHILDREN?

Children:

  • practice and improve their independence;
  • develop self-esteem and their sense of responsibility;
  • and are placed at the centre of their learning.

WHAT ARE THE KEY FEATURES OF PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION?

  • Individual work

Children spend one hour each morning and afternoon doing individual work in mathematics, français and English. During individual work periods, students work at their own pace, have their work corrected, and record their progress on the computer.

  •  Group lessons

Other subjects are taught to the whole group every day.

  • Circle time

Students present their work to their class during daily circle time.

  • Presentations

Students present a poem, a song, a reading or a short play in front of an audience of parents and other students at the school during a monthly assembly.

  • Weekly report

The weekly computer-generated report details all of the work a student has done during the week. The student, parents and teacher use the report to provide feedback on the work.
