Kindergarten Program

At the CECCE, play-based learning is central to all actions.

In 2010, the Ontario Ministry of Education began to implement the Kindergarten Program province-wide. We are continuing to build on our experience in delivering this new model. Teachers and early childhood educators work in close cooperation, sharing classrooms and time with the children. For all classes of 15 children or fewer, a single teacher is responsible for delivering the program.

For the program, kindergarten classrooms are organized in areas for learning that contain materials for individual and group activities. These areas help children develop a taste for learning through manipulation, exploration, play and inquiry by offering them the opportunity to choose from among a wide range of activities. Children’s learning is planned, assessed, evaluated and reported based on four frames, which are designed to reflect the integrated way in which play-based and inquiry-based learning takes place in the kindergarten classroom. They also help children develop the attributes and attitudes needed to become responsible, active and contributing members of society. These four frames are:

  • Belonging and contribution;
  • Self-regulation and well-being;
  • Demonstration of learning in literacy and numeracy;
  • Problem-solving and innovation.
