New school year begins for students of the CECCE’s French-language Catholic schools

Monday, August 25, 2014 – Tomorrow, over 21,600 students from junior kindergarten through grade 12 will begin a new school year in one of 51 schools part of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE). Welcoming them will be over 2450 staff who are today putting the finishing touches on the preparations needed to ensure their wellness and success throughout the year.

Activities at some schools have gradually been ramping up since mid-August. In accordance with their balanced school year calendar, the students of École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître returned to class on August 14, and secondary students taking a trades concentration at Centre professionnel et technique Minto returned to class on August 19.

“The new school year will begin under the theme Believing everything is possible and with the watchwords hope, success, and growth,” explained Bernard Roy, Director of Education at the CECCE. Indeed, expected enrollment growth of 480 students and the construction of two secondary schools signal another year of growth for the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est. “This growth reflects the confidence that parents show in us when they enroll their children in one of our schools. It is rewarding to see how much that parents appreciate the services offered by the CECCE and its schools,” stated Denis Poirier, Chair of the CECCE. “Our most recent parent survey indicated that over 94% of parents were satisfied with their child’s school.”

The 2013-2014 school year was marked by major construction projects at a number of CECCE schools.

Construction work at École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Anne in Lowertown is almost finished, giving students access to brand-new classrooms and a renovated school thanks to a demolition and partial reconstruction project valued at $7.1 million. The community will be invited to see the quality of the new facilities with their own eyes at the official opening of the École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Anne in October.

Students of École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité will now have access to all the new facilities constructed over the past few months. The school, which offers a Sports-Study Program, has been upgraded with the addition of two double gymnasiums and related facilities, including a fitness room, as well as six classrooms. Athletes and community partners will officially open this new addition valued at $7.1 million on August 29.

The coming months will see ground broken on the construction of a new French-language Catholic secondary school in the community of Fernbank in West Ottawa.

New for 2014-2015

Following the launch of our international student program in March 2013, the CECCE is thrilled to be hosting its first students originating from various countries, who will be warmly welcomed and strongly supported by one of three Catholic secondary schools, namely Béatrice-Desloges, Franco-Cité, and Pierre-Savard.

In five of our 10 schools offering the Petits pas à trois junior kindergarten program, parents, guardians, and childcare professionals will, starting this September, benefits from having two play groups per week for children 0-6 years of age. The children will be supervised by the early childhood educators of the Petits pas à trois program in the early childhood education facilities of the schools in question.

The approximately 400 students enrolled at the French-language Catholic school in Stittsville will see their school’s name change slightly. With the canonization of Pope John Paul II last spring, the school will henceforth be known as the École élémentaire catholique Saint-Jean-Paul II.

With over 21,000 students attending 41 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, and its school for adults, the CECCE represents the largest Canadian network of French-language schools outside Quebec.
