New daycare spaces at Pembroke’s Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie

June 9, 2017, PEMBROKE – For the 2018-2019 school year, Pembroke families will have access to 18 additional spaces at La garderie Les petites mains daycare located in the Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie, following an investment of $1,058,757 by the Ministry of Education of Ontario. This announcement was made this morning at the Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie by the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) and its partner, La garderie Les petites mains daycare.

The 26 spaces for toddlers and preschool children that currently exist in the daycare at Jeanne-Lajoie are already full. Thanks to these new funds, 8 additional spaces for children from age 2.5 to 4 years will be made available to Pembroke families. The funding from the Ministry of Education of Ontario will also allow a room to be created for 10 infants from age 0 to 18 months, a service that will be valuable to Pembroke families with young children, who have been requesting this addition for a number of years.

According to the Chair of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, Johanne Lacombe, the addition of daycare spaces is essential to making sure the Francophone community remains viable and thrives. “Families that want a French-language, Catholic education will be able to count on additional spaces at Les petites mains daycare in the Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie. Getting a good start from a young age in a French-language environment ensures a smooth transition to school, and promotes learning and success.”

Director of Education Réjean Sirois noted how important he believes early childhood education services to be: “The children of Pembroke are in good hands at La Garderie Les petites mains daycare. What the children begin learning there will be developed in junior and senior kindergarten at the Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie, and throughout their studies, so that each and every student, enriched and inspired by their Catholic and Francophone identity, will progress toward their full potential by becoming critical and creative thinkers, assertive and mature young adults, and engaged and ethical citizens.”

In order to make space for additional children at Les petites mains daycare, construction work will be needed over the coming year. The specific needs will be determined along with the partner and the school, and professional services will then be retained. Depending on how the next steps go, construction may start in spring 2018, to finish in time for back-to-school 2018 or January 2019.

The Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie has 508 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 6, and 300 students from Grade 7 to Grade 12. You can still register your child for the next school year; please contact the school at 613-732-8302 for personalized support.
