CECCE Marks National Sweater Day

February 4, 2016, OTTAWA - Today, 43 Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) schools will participate in National Sweater Day.

National Sweater Day is a fun way to learn about the importance of saving energy and to inspire people to use less heat. According to WWF Canada, heating accounts for 80% of energy use in Canada’s residential sector and is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

CECCE schools have planned a number of initiatives to celebrate this day, including warm clothing drives, assemblies in gyms, sock hops to create heat through movement, and spirit days.

“The CECCE has a duty to encourage its students to adopt behaviours that are good for people and the planet,” said Réjean Sirois, Director of Education. “Green initiatives such as National Sweater Day give our students an opportunity to participate in a larger-scale initiative and to learn about how they can help create a fairer, greener, more united world.”

“There is a reason why the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est has an impressive number of certified EcoSchools. We have 30 certified schools so far!” added Johanne Lacombe, CECCE Chair. “The board is working hard to reduce its impact on the planet, and we are committed to transmitting these values to our students so they become responsible ecocitizens.”
