Back to school at the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est

August 31, 2015, OTTAWA - Tomorrow, on the first day of the new school year at the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE), close to 22,000 students will cross the threshold of 41 elementary and 11 secondary schools in Ottawa, Merrickville, Brockville, Kingston, Trenton and Pembroke.

At schools with balanced calendars, back-to-school has been gradually getting underway since mid-August, with classes beginning on August 19 at École élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître, and August 25 at Centre professionnel et technique Minto.

“Already this year, we are again seeing an increase in the number of enrolments in our schools,” said Bernard Roy, outgoing Director of Education of the CECCE. “This steady rise over more than a decade is attributable, at least in part, to the excellence of the education provided at the CECCE. This can in turn be explained by the quality of our school staff, who ensure the success and well-being of each and every student. Our students achieve excellent results on provincial tests, year after year, and parents have faith in us.”

In Ottawa’s west end, the 200 students of the new École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais will be able to enter their new school building, currently under construction, in February 2016. In the meantime, they will be housed in a section of École secondaire catholique Pierre-Savard that is reserved for them while they await the completion of their new school in Stittsville. The timetable and course make-up have already been arranged according to the teaching program of the new school, ensuring that the transition to the new building will be a smooth one. The newÉcole secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais will offer students a concentration in entrepreneurship and innovation in addition to the regular curriculum, plus a full range of athletics and before- and after-school activities.

The CECCE has a number of major projects planned for 2015-2016. In the south end of Orleans, construction work on a new French-language Catholic secondary school made good headway over the summer and will continue into summer 2016. As well, in the Alta Vista section of Ottawa, the demolition and rebuilding of École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Geneviève will continue throughout the school year.

“Thanks to the trust parents place in us by enrolling their children in a CECCE Catholic school, we are proud to provide them with quality facilities in neighbourhoods where the need is really being felt,” said Denis Poirier, Chair of the school board.

Fall will also usher in a new Director of Education at the CECCE. Réjean Sirois will take the helm of the largest French-language school board outside Quebec effective October 5, 2015. He is excited by the new challenges that await him: “The field of education is inspiring, fascinating and gratifying. I’m very eager to join the team at the CECCE and share my passion by pursuing a shared vision built around cooperation and innovation in education.”

As well, the CECCE is entering the first year of implementation for its new strategic vision, Transformation 2018. Its purpose is to enable the school board to transform the learning experience so as to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in the digital age. This will happen in large part by developing innovative projects in schools, modernizing school libraries, and hiring classroom staff. Moreover, the CECCE team will continue to embody the welcoming climate of its Catholic schools, as expressed in the CECCE’s mission, by encouraging “every student to learn, pursue their dreams, and build a better world.”

With close to 22,000 students in 41 elementary and 11 secondary schools, as well as its school for adults, the CECCE is the largest Canadian network of French-language schools outside Quebec.
