180 CECCE Students Gather in the Woods to Develop Leadership Skills

October 3, 2016, OTTAWA - From October 4 to 6, 180 students from all 12 Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) high schools will gather at the Bark Lake Leadership Centre in Irondale, Ontario.

Chosen by their peers and student governments members, the students will participate in a leadership training program that will help them play an important role in their school, the board and their school community.

These young leaders will enhance their teamwork skills, learn how to communicate effectively, and develop a better understanding of themselves and others. During the retreat, they will plan an entire school year’s worth of activities for their fellow students. They will participate in high ropes courses, escape room challenges, Taizé singing, campfire stories and an all-Franco dance.

CECCE Chair Johanne Lacombe is excited about the fact that participants have been gaining so much from this opportunity for the past 10 years: “This kind of educational activity outside the classroom enables students to push their limits and play a meaningful role in their own academic journey. They can apply everything they learn during this leadership program to their school and their community, which truly benefits all of their peers.”

“The purpose of this annual activity is to give students the tools they need to take on leadership roles within student government,” said Réjean Sirois, CECCE Director of Education. “Every year, more and more high school students want to get involved in their schools and communities. It is up to the board to create opportunities that encourage young people to achieve their full potential. This is one way the CECCE is transforming the learning experience.”

The 180 students will return from the retreat brimming with ideas, the skills to put those ideas into practice, and the desire to help their fellow students and themselves experience the best school year yet.
